I work in a call center for a bank from 7:55-4:55 M-F. Sounds exciting I know. It’s actually a very unique job, and a very eye opening one. You can hear people talk about their financial struggles, but it’s different when you see it. I’ll save that topic for another blog.
So if you’re like me, you work a day job somewhere, and you’re trying to build your own thing on the side. But how do you manage doing both? That’s what I’m going to share with you today. My perspective on how I’ve been managing and growing my personal brand, while working a day job.
I wake up at 4:30am everyday. I check my social media sites, reply to notifications, check other people’s posts, and engage with the community. Yes, I wake up about 3 hours before I have to be my day job. Some say I may be crazy for waking up so early.
Around 5am I go to the gym to work out to wake up my body and mind. It’s important to prepare both for the day. I typically only spend about 30 minutes at the gym in the morning.
Back at my apartment, I start creating content and sharing between the different social media platforms I use. I Schedule out my tweets using Buffer, which I’ll probably be switching to GoKittr soon, so this way my twitter works for me delivering content while I’m at work and can’t be on my phone.
I intentionally make effort to work my brand in the morning. I make sure I reply to every tweet or Instagram comment that was done over night. I do not use any sort of auto reply, it’s all me connecting with people. I am humbled and grateful for every single person that decided to follow me on social media. Seriously, I love you all! Thank you! And to all of you reading this blog as well!
I always check my phones on my breaks, and engage with my followers during this time too.
Something important to note here. I put just as much effort into my day job, as I do my personal brand. Why? Because I believe in integrity. I’m not going to be a slacker at one thing, and a hustler at another. That would make me a hypocrite. I try to give as much value as I can in bother my day job and side hustle personal brand. It has proven pretty successful at this point for me.
When I get off work, I continue the same things. Engaging, creating, documenting, building. Then I go to bed at some point in the night, wake up at 430am and do it all over again.
It’s not boring or mundane. If building my personal brand did not bring joy to me, I wouldn’t spend all this time on it. I would just binge watch Netflix and play videos games all the time.
This is not an every once in a while thing you do. It’s daily. You put out content and engage daily. Every. Single. Day. You do this because that’s part of what it takes to become better at something. It’s what’s required to break out of obscurity, and for people to see what you’re doing and become interested. At least they will if you have talent (as Gary Vaynerchuck would say).
There are a lot of programs out there that can build your followers up, but this is really the worst way to do it. You will hall several thousand followers, but no engagement from them. Social media is about engagement. Your brand needs engagement by other people.
One of my favorite social medial sites for personal branding that I love, is beBee.com. This platform has an amazing culture of engaging audience. Instagram and twitter does a great job too, but beBee is really great at it. If blogging is your vehicle to get your message across, I recommend that platform.
What you want is organic growth. Meaning, your audience builds up because you post great content, and engage with the people. Organic growth takes time, takes patience, and takes work. Of course there is influence marketing that can boost your followers, but I don’t know enough about that to really

I may talk about Gary Vee a lot here, mostly because he is the expert in this field. I learn a lot from just watching what he does.
It’s important to understand the macro of things. It takes time to build up something great. There’s no silver bullet, or magic formula. It takes work, it takes time, it takes the daily grind. So have some patience!
This is the biggest lesson of them all. Take action. You can do all the planning you want, but until you actually put out that content, you’re not going to build anything.
This is all very basic stuff, I know, but I hope it helps anyone who is maybe struggling with building their personal brand.
